Photay – Reconstruct ft. Seafloor / No Sass [Woodstock, NY]

Electronic / Modern Jazz / Hip-Hop / Funk

New York producer Photay (Evan Shornstein) released his self-titled debut album about a year back (pick it up for free!) and was barely noticed. It was a compilation of the work he’s produced over the period of 2010-2012. Following a trip to West Africa, the album was heavily influenced by African natural sounds. Interesting as it was, it definitely put him on the radar for me.
So when he released No Sass I (with the internet) welcomed his new sonic palette of glitzy horns, staccato-ed beats resulting in equal parts jazz, hip-hop, funk and well, awesome.

His new self-titled album is due later this month on the 26th and from the sound of it (get it?), he’s definitely worked it out this time.

Fans of Aphex Twin, Tennyson, and Capital Cities will love his sound.
Show him some well-deserved love at this facebook and souncloud page.

Daft Punk – Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Dillon Francis Remix) [Los Angeles, US]

Electronic / Dance / Funk

Happy Easter all! Hope everyone’s enjoying the festive season and eating your own weights in chocolate, but lets not forget that diabetes is simply not in trend. Maybe next year. And yes, to help you haul that easter egg filled ass onto the treadmill, it’s that track again. As if you don’t own enough edits/samples of this oldie (but a goldie) already. However when Dillon Francis brought this back during Coachella, and by no means was it outdated. Let’s not lie to ourselves, it’s always gonna work. If you’ve got a million versions, this is the one to keep. Yea, Kanye, I said it.

Making it in music editing and photo editing. Some people just have everything.
Being booked two years in a row for Coachella, he’s a rare one.
Scoop up a free download (how generous!) as well as check out his other amazing recent mixes.

Chromeo – Come Alive ft. Toro Y Moi [Montreal, CA / Columbia, US]

Electro Pop / Funk

With the week long 40 degree heatwave here in Melbourne, tracks like this make the sweating worth it. A little under four minutes, but just so, so much funk. When it’s said that good things come in small packages they weren’t kidding. Following the raging success of the previous two tracks from their forthcoming LP White Women (namely Over Your Shoulder and Sexy Socialite), the electro funk duo does not lose any momentum. I mean, this pretty much topped their track Night by Night in 2009 which an almost Daft Punk-esque robotic sound. This here ended 2013 right and will be most definitely kept on rotation throughout 2014!

Salt Ashes – Somebody [Brighton, UK]

Synth Pop / Nu-Disco / Funk

Still residing in the land of scare internet, this was shared with me by a dear friend of mine, I did not expect to love this as much as I did. Emerging UK artist Salt Ashes will most definitely be a strong addition to the revival of the Nu-Disco genre. Not much to her name but a lot of promise and expectations will definitely follow such a strong debut.
2014 you’re looking good so far!

There’s not much on her soundcloud as of now but follow her for updates here!

Mistletunes!

Indie / Rock / Dream / Pop / Electronic / Folk / Hip-Hop / Funk / Soul / Christmas

It’s been almost 2 months since our last post, I’d like to throw in a few excuses about hectic internet, busy agendas etc.etc. but we made it in time for Christmas. So, forgiveness and all that!

Remember that party you went to/threw that played Michael Bublé’s entire Christmas album on repeat? Given the Bubs can be incredibly charismatic and his cover of All I Want For Christmas Is You has arguably outdone if not completely recreated the original, it still doesn’t deserve multiple appearances in one night. And those were the good ones, because I’m sure we’ve all been to child-friendly parties where try-hard parents attempt to impress their children by being hip and streaming Justin Bieber’s Underneath The Mistletoe which is all good fun until Busta Rhymes’s rendition of Drummer Boy comes on. Yeah, pa rum pa pum poo.

They were most definitely cruising with the right tunes.

Putting the Biebz and Bubs aside, Christmas is generally a season filled with good food, good thoughts, good company, and terrible music. So if you’ve got a party to host tonight or are just looking for some festive tunes to accompany your long drives to relatives without dampening your cheer, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve taken the liberty of creating a massive playlist comprehensive as ever of all the good Christmas covers you’ll ever find (don’t quote me on this) and a few originals covering every all sorts of genres, so that there’ll be a little festive spirit of everybody.

Okay they’re all pretty good but everyone gets sick of too much Christmas cheer because we’re all secretly little grinches on the inside. So I’ve bolded my favorites! ^^
