Wilsen – Magnolia [New York, US]

Dream Pop / Folk /Downtempo

Definitely not the first time I’ve had these guys on our blog. Check out what we had to say about them in a previous post. New York based folk/dream pop group Wilsen are back almost more than a year of absence and boy are we glad. Magnolia being the title track of a brand new four-track EP (following their mini-album Sirensis to be released on the 18th of May. Exciting times. This track here’s definitely a track to fall indefinitely to, like off a really really tall building. Not trying to encourage any daredevils to challenge gravity here but that’s what quality dream pop does for you. Fans of Youth Lagoon and Beach House are gonna melt.

These guys are new, but if you’ve been paying any attention at all. They’re good.
Show them some love at facebook. soundcloud. twitter. Go, you know you want to (:

If you’re in the UK check them out in person at any of these chain of debut shows they’ll be playing at.
Having previously supported Daughter, London Grammar and many more on tour.
You know it’s time to jump on that bandwagon.

Mistletunes!

Indie / Rock / Dream / Pop / Electronic / Folk / Hip-Hop / Funk / Soul / Christmas

It’s been almost 2 months since our last post, I’d like to throw in a few excuses about hectic internet, busy agendas etc.etc. but we made it in time for Christmas. So, forgiveness and all that!

Remember that party you went to/threw that played Michael Bublé’s entire Christmas album on repeat? Given the Bubs can be incredibly charismatic and his cover of All I Want For Christmas Is You has arguably outdone if not completely recreated the original, it still doesn’t deserve multiple appearances in one night. And those were the good ones, because I’m sure we’ve all been to child-friendly parties where try-hard parents attempt to impress their children by being hip and streaming Justin Bieber’s Underneath The Mistletoe which is all good fun until Busta Rhymes’s rendition of Drummer Boy comes on. Yeah, pa rum pa pum poo.

They were most definitely cruising with the right tunes.

Putting the Biebz and Bubs aside, Christmas is generally a season filled with good food, good thoughts, good company, and terrible music. So if you’ve got a party to host tonight or are just looking for some festive tunes to accompany your long drives to relatives without dampening your cheer, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve taken the liberty of creating a massive playlist comprehensive as ever of all the good Christmas covers you’ll ever find (don’t quote me on this) and a few originals covering every all sorts of genres, so that there’ll be a little festive spirit of everybody.

Okay they’re all pretty good but everyone gets sick of too much Christmas cheer because we’re all secretly little grinches on the inside. So I’ve bolded my favorites! ^^

Here’s the tracklist:

Emancipator – First Snow
My Morning Jacket – Xmas Time is Here Again
Civil Wars – I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
Zee Avi – No Christmas for Me
Local Natives – We Come Back
The Walkmen – Christmas Party
Train – Shake Up Christmas
Carousel – Christmas Time With You
Blitzen Trapper – Christmas Is Coming Soon
Remington 60 – Here Comes Christmas
Mac Miller & Ariana Grande – Baby It’s Cold Outside
The Ramones – Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)
The Shins – Wonderful Christmastime
Fun. – Sleighride
Dog Is Dead – Christmas Wrapping (The Waitresses Cover)
She & Him – Christmas Waltz
Belle & Sebastian – Are You Coming Over For Christmas?
Work Drugs – Never Gonna Be Alone on Christmas
Eliza and the Bear – It Gets Cold
The xx – Last Christmas (Live on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge)
Nick Santino (from A Rocket To The Moon) – Blue Christmas (Elvis Presley Cover)
Julian Casablancas – I Wish It Was Christmas Today
Low – Just Like Christmas
Atlas Sound – Artificial Snow (Notown Version)
Sufjan Stevens – Sister Winter (Broke For Free Remix)
Kanye West – Christmas In Harlem
Jean Tonique – Funky Christmas
The Kinks – Father Christmas
Death Cab For Cutie – Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
Blink 182 – I Won’t Be Home For Christmas
The Eels – Everything’s Gonna Be Cool This Christmas

The Killers – Christmas in L.A ft. Dawes

Sufjan Stevens – Christmas Unicorn
Mazzy Star – Flowers In December
Low – Taking Down The Tree
Highasakite – Snow Don’t Fall
Emancipator – Soon It’ll Be Cold Enough To Build Fires

Not sure if this is entirely legal but as a Christmas present I’ve also thrown up the entire playlist on dropbox here with tons of other bonus tracks that were uanvailable on soundcloud so plunder at will.

Merry Christmas y’all! I promise we’ll be back and much more present in 2014!
But again, you know what they say about New Year resolutions 😉

Work Drugs – Bellport Bay [Philadelphia, US]

Dream Pop / Indie Folk

Fans of Kings of Convenience will hear a lot of that in this track. These guys never stop displaying versatility in their genre. The last track I heard from them Digital Girl was almost Disco-esque but this is completely different. Perfect for a chill autumn sunset watching the leaves change and tumble around while occasionally chasing after the crunchiest of the bunch (oh such a guilty pleasure).

“In Bellport Bay, summer’s on our shoulders and flaking off like perfume”

Snap up a free download at their soundcloud here.

Daughter – Run [London, UK]

Indie Folk / Acoustic

It’s been more than a little while since our disappearance but priorities really do catch up with you, in a really bitchy sorta way. Before you realize, you’ve taken such a long break that it becomes pretty damn intimidating to even write up a new post. But again it’d be selfish not to share. So henceforth, music will be shared as it is with or without all this writing that y’all probably never read anyways !

Enjoy this semi-new track from Daughter, it’s probably my new favorite and that’s saying a lot because they’re very prolific and so much of what they’ve done so far is gold.

Btw, is anybody else aware of this freespace thing?
It’s ridiculous, totes gonna link y’all up right here

Wilsen – Oblivion (Grimes Cover) [New York, US]

Dream Pop / Folk / Downtempo / Covers

If like myself you’ve enjoyed Claire Boucher (Grimes) but been completely mystified over how Oblivion scored Pitchfork’s song of the year, listen to this cover and perhaps it might clarify things. It sure helped convince me.
New York based group Wilsen’s version has rendered the track much more folksy and approachable, drawing out a tender bone-chilling quality. Fans of Daughter and Cat Power are sure to catch on their sound quickly. It’s no wonder they’ve been the supporting act for Daughter’s tour.

Enough said, check it out yourself.

I’m gonna go ahead and post another track of theirs, Dusk below because it’s just too good. Lead vocalist Tasmin Wilson’s voice is simply ethereal.

Needless to say these guys are gonna be huge.

If you like what you’ve heard, check out their soundcloud here, personally I can’t get enough of them.
